Parking Brake, electronic

Parking Brake, electronic

The electronic parking brake (EPB) in the Passat and the Passat Estate replaces the usual handbrake, and the conventional handbrake lever is no longer necessary. That creates more storage space between the front seats. The electronic parking brake is operated by means of two geared electric motors on the rear disc brakes. The mechanical components are designed in such a way that they will hold the parked Passat securely, even if the onboard electric power supply fails. Indicator lights in the instrument cluster and in the button show whether the parking brake has been activated. An operating noise from the EPB also indicates that the brake is being applied. In addition to ease of operation by means of a large button (to the left of the rotary light switch), the electronic parking brake also offers various additional comfort and safety functions. For example, the dynamic automatic brake release makes manual release of the parking brake superfluous. All the driver needs to do is to drive off - the EPB is released automatically.
